Rationale for Module |
The module complements students’ operational understanding of cultural industries and management developed at Levels 1 and 2 by providing a conceptual and institutional context for strategic decision-making. Future cultural managers need to understand how cultural policy is developed and exercised, and how it is changing in the context of new cultural agendas, Europeanisation and the growth of global cultural industries. The module takes a broad definition of culture to include the arts, popular culture, cultural identity, museums and heritage, as well as industries such as film, music, broadcasting, publishing and interactive leisure software. |
| Aims |
This module aims to: 1. develop understanding of the nature, function and limits of cultural policy at national and European level 2. explore the operation of policy and public regulatory and funding agencies at regional, national and European level 3. examine the changing focus of cultural policy, and the cultural policy consequences of the commercialisation of culture and the growth of global cultural industries |
