Rationale for Module |
Every company requires management, some form of
organisation and personnel. The product offered influences decisions regarding these management and organisational issues. A firm’s organisation structures its activities; allocates roles, responsibilities and authority; assigns tasks to employees; integrates employees in to the firm’s rules, procedures and expectations governing job performance; and collects and transmits information necessary for coordination, decision-making and control. As a vehicle through which company strategy is implemented, organisation design can only be as effective as the people employed within it. In today’s international, information-based, serviceoriented economy, the know-how and skills of the staff are valuable assets that have to be managed strategically, developed systematically and utilized effectively. The marketing of products more and more requires a focus on the needs of the market partners and especially of those of the consumers. Even industrial products often come along with a mix of indispensable services. The characteristics of services mean that the interaction between staff and customers is crucial to how the latter view the product. The module provides an opportunity for students to confront and critically assess the assumptions underpinning the management function, company structures, types of organisation as well as aspects of personnel management such as planning, recruitment and development. Furthermore, it aims to instil an appreciation of the importance of quality management. This module thus studies the key human resource issues in work organizations in an environment characterised by constant change in terms of strategy and skills, diversity in terms of organizational practices and internationalisation, and in which the use of interpersonal skills for communication is of critical importance. The module builds on the content of the Level 1 modules “Business Operations” and “Professional Development and Communication” and complements the Level 2 modules “Business Law” and “Project Management & Professional Communication”. |
