HIB
plans to introduce a postgraduate programme following on from the Bachelor's degree
and leading to the award of a Master's degree as of the winter semester 2011.
The Master's programme is currently undergoing validation. This means that if
you take up your Master studies in Germany in the winter term of 2008, you can go on to
take a consecutive Master's course in your specialist subject straight after
receiving your Bachelor's award, since as plans currently stand, the validation of the Master's programme will have been completed in good time.
The specialist subjects of Tourism, Events Management, Cultural Management,
Marketing and
Business Management will be available right from the start.
In order to underscore the international nature of the Master's award, HIB is
seeking validation
from the Open University Validation Services, a process that has already been
successfully undertaken for its Bachelor's programme. All courses in the
Master's programme will be held in English. HIB is an associate institution of
the Open University and once validation is in place, you will be able to earn
an internationally recognised Master's degree from the largest university in
Great Britain. This award will bear not only the HIB crest but also that of the
Open University. It enjoys an excellent reputation of both national and
international standing. We are
certain that passing your master studies in Germany will give
you a competitive edge when applying for jobs and for your subsequent
professional and academic development.
The
Master's is delivered over a period of 3 semesters. In the first semester you
study at HIB in Germany. In the second semester you have the option of
spending one semester at a partner university abroad. In
consultation with HIB, the credits you earn there may be counted towards your
programme at HIB. The third semester offers you considerable flexibility: this
final semester is spent writing your Master's dissertation and attending a
further study module. This module is taught outside the regular curriculum in
block form, an arrangement which does not require your permanent presence at HIB
and allows you some scope to manage your time to suit your needs. On completing
the first year of the Master's programme you are free to enter the job market by
taking up a placement, for example, or some other form of employment.
The Master studies are conceived as a consecutive programme. The entry
requirement will therefore be a degree (Bachelor's or German Diplom) equivalent
to at least 180 ECTS credits in the special subject to be studied. Together with
the Bachelor's award, the Master's degree thus represents an overall total of
300 ECTS credits.
Upon graduating from the programme, you will be awarded a 'Master of Arts in
International Business', with a suffix to indicate your special subject.
Assuming, for example, that you took your Master's degree at HIB in tourism, you
would be awarded a 'Master of Arts in International Business with Tourism
Management'. This title documents a course structure that balances a broad
business qualification with disciplinary specialisation in a way that caters for
the needs of the working world.
The
Master's programme, like our existing Bachelor's programme, is application oriented.
Your subsequent 'employability' will thus constitute a point of reference
throughout. In order to ensure that your qualification profile meets the demands
of companies in an international market environment, the study programme
maintains the proven fundamental structure of the Bachelor's programme:
It will manifest a balanced symbiosis between broad-based
management studies
and specialist teaching in your chosen field of study. This programme design
will provide you with a platform of versatile business knowledge and management
skills from which to pursue a variety of career opportunities in all kinds of
sectors. Moreover, in your special subject you will be prepared for the
professional demands facing you in your chosen sector or line of work later on.
You may include up
to three foreign languages in your postgraduate programme: you will be able
to continue with the second foreign language from your Bachelor's degree and can
learn a third language in your second year of study. Besides the mandatory
modules from the core management course and the selectable modules for your
special subject, you also take so-called 'electives' chosen from the overall HIB
curriculum. In addition you are also free to take certain optional modules.
Important note: no responsibility can be taken for the accuracy of details about the planned Master's course as these may change in the course of the accreditation procedure and ongoing development of the Master's programme.
