International Studies in Event Management - OverviewMICE - Meetings, Incentives, Congresses and Events today constitute a sector in its own right. The events industry is one of the leading service categories and an important pillar of tourism: it secures hundreds of thousands of jobs and is showing a steep upward trend. Event management services arise from a combination of numerous individual building blocks such as offerings from airlines, hotels and events agencies at home and abroad. For a successful career, therefore, you not only need know-how in event management but must also have a broad grounding in tourism.
And
so the interdisciplinary programmme in Events Management at HIB combines
core activities from Business Administration and Tourism with the main Events
Management and Congress Management modules. Business core modules
such as international management and marketing strategy ensure a qualification
pro-file of the disciplinary breadth required for working life. In modules such
as Tourism and Events Management you deal with the organisation of different
types of events, with hotel management, the tour operator market and the
handling of services in international air traffic. Comprehensive software
training brings you up to speed in job-related office applications. In the third
year of study, which takes place entirely in English, you will add to your
skills by taking specialist modules such as events management and production or
congress, convention and fair management. This allows you to acquire special
knowledge about the events business, the management of different forms of events
and their technical requirements, and, very importantly, how to coherently stage
an event. In your third year you also take other supplementary modules from
areas such as cultural management or marketing man-agement that you are free to
choose to suit your specialist interests.
During
your events management studies at HIB you take at least
two foreign
languages to allow you to deal confidently with international business
partners on a daily basis. We offer
you different language levels matched to your prior knowledge: besides English, you take a further
foreign language such as Spanish or
French. If you have a strong aptitude for foreign languages, as of
semester 3 you can also study
in three languages, selecting a third language such as French, Spanish, Italian or Chinese.
Subsidiary language areas such as corporate communication, conversation, and
translation ensure that the language training is geared to the demands of your
subsequent working world. The additional Area Studies module gives you important
insights into the history, culture and economic life of the different language
areas.
After semester 2, you complete a placement of around 3 months' duration and after semester 8, you complete a 4-months' placement. This gives you a general idea of the professional opportunities available in the MICE industry. Needless to say, you don't have to spend this practical phase in domestic companies but are also free to experience first hand the fascinating career options that the MICE industry abroad has to offer. Within the framework of our comprehensive soft skills training you devote yourself to developing your personality. You deal with topics such as the ability to work in a team, conflict-solving potential and strong communication skills – attributes of particular importance in subsequent managerial posts.
